Keeping Staff and Growing a Team – Some Secrets from Western Turbo

Recently Western Turbo team members attended the Association of Diesel Specialists  (ADS) Convention to stay connected to our suppliers and learn about new and exciting products and technology.  A Keynote Speaker presented on the topic of “What Makes Technicians Leave, and How to Stop Them”.  This has been a topic of conversation with most service centres since the end of the pandemic, and highlights one of the major challenges that most diesel service shops are facing. Here are some of the key takeaways from that presentation that apply to all organizations that wish to keep and grow their teams…

Why Do Staff Leave?

Most believe that staff leave because they are offered more money somewhere else. Although this may be true,  most people don’t leave a job if they are happy.  They only start looking because of discontentment.  As they get deeper into their search for a new job, the money part is introduced.

Team Members Talk…

When a team member is discontent, this can cause a domino effect, as team members talk about their work environment and will share their dissatisfaction with others. This may cause others to consider a change.

New Generation, New Attitude.

The new generation of employees do not live to work – they are more focused on  a work/life balance. This trend is necessary to embrace and to offer flexibility to your team in both hours and environment.  Happy employees stay longer, are more productive and make for a healthier work environment.  Happy staff also make great mentors to up and coming staff members – creating a culture that encourages longevity and inclusion.

Ask for Feedback.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask your staff what they think about the work environment.  Ask them what they like, what they don’t like.  A great question to pose to a team member is to ask; “If you could change one thing, what would that be?”  You don’t know what you don’t know.  This could start a conversation that will lead to a better work environment for all.
