After many fits and starts, diesel cars are gaining traction in the U.S. market, fueled largely by German carmakers including Volkswagen, which opened a Tennessee plant in May.

Volkswagen officials confirmed that the company is bringing the first diesel convertible to the U.S. in the form of the new Beetle Cabrio TDI.

Audi reported its sixth-straight record-setting month for 2011 with the best U.S. sales for June in company history. Last month, consumers purchased 10,051 Audi luxury vehicles, increasing sales 16.9 percent since June 2010, during which consumers purchased 8,601 vehicles. Last month’s sales marked the fourth-best month in Audi of America history.
